Travelling by rail is safe and there are many simple precautions you can take to protect yourself:
- Act confidently and by be conscious and alert to your surroundings - headphones, tiredness and excessive drugs or alcohol will reduce this ability
- Stand in a well lit area and try to stay in view of a CCTV camera
- Walk close to other groups of commuters, wherever possible.
- Immediately report any harassing or threatening passengers, or anything of an anti-social nature to a train guard or driver, transit officer, police officer or other staff member
In an emergency ring 000.
Try to:
- Remain calm
- Remove yourself from the vicinity of potential harm
- Make your way to the closest busy, well lit place you can find
- Seek assistance from a train guard, driver, transit officer, police officer or other staff member
- Activate an Emergency Help Point - there are over 700 located across the network and one on each platform at every station
If travelling on a train:
- At night, we encourage you to travel in the carriage near the guard’s compartment and utilise the Nightsafe area (painted blue on the platform)
- If there are other customers on the train, sit near them and not by yourself
- Try not to become isolated
- If the carriage empties, or you feel uneasy or uncomfortable, move to another occupied carriage when possible, or sit close to the guards compartment indicated by a blue light
- In the event of an emergency, remain calm and listen to announcements. Follow instructions from train crew and emergency response personnel.
Our staff can arrange for an ambulance or Police to attend if required.
If possible, try to remember the description of offender/s to inform Police. You should also note the time, place and any other details of the incident which will help us isolate any CCTV footage. |
